Antoni Tàpies (1923–2012) was one of the most influential figures of post-war European art. Emerging from the avant-garde circles of Barcelona, he developed a highly personal approach to abstraction and became closely associated with Art Informel and material painting.

His work is distinguished by heavily textured surfaces, muted earthy tones and recurring signs such as crosses, letters, numbers and fragments of the human body. By incorporating materials including marble dust, paper, cloth and rope, Tàpies transformed the surface of the artwork into a physical field marked by time, memory and human experience.

Working across painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking, Tàpies continually explored the expressive potential of ordinary materials and familiar symbols. His graphic works retain the tactile quality and contemplative depth of his wider practice, combining experimentation with a distinctive and immediately recognisable visual language.
