Asger Jorn (1914–1973) was a Danish painter, sculptor, printmaker and writer, and one of the most important figures of the European post-war avant-garde. A co-founder of CoBrA in 1948, he championed an instinctive and experimental approach to art that challenged academic tradition and conventional ideas of beauty.
His work is characterised by vigorous brushwork, intense colour and forms that shift between abstraction and figuration. Drawing on mythology, folklore, popular culture and children’s art, Jorn created layered compositions populated by distorted figures, animals and imaginary creatures.
Jorn worked across painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and works on paper. His graphic works preserve the spontaneity and expressive force of his paintings, combining dynamic lines, vivid colour and a strong sense of movement.
