Chu Teh-Chun (朱德群, 1920–2014) was a painter born in China who later settled in France and became one of the leading figures of lyrical abstraction. He developed a distinctive visual language that brought together the traditions of Chinese calligraphy and landscape painting with the expressive freedom of European abstraction.
His work is characterised by sweeping gestures, luminous colour and atmospheric compositions that evoke light, movement and the forces of nature. Rather than depicting identifiable landscapes, Chu created poetic spaces in which forms appear to emerge, dissolve and transform across the surface.
Working across painting, drawing, ink, calligraphy and printmaking, Chu continually explored the relationship between colour, rhythm and space. His graphic works preserve the fluidity and contemplative quality of his paintings, combining dynamic movement with a refined sense of balance and harmony.
