Cy Twombly (1928–2011) was an American artist and one of the most distinctive figures of post-war art. He developed a highly personal visual language combining expressive lines, handwritten marks, fragmented words, and references to classical mythology, poetry, and history.
Twombly worked across painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking, exploring the relationship between gesture, language, memory, and emotion. His lithographs and etchings reflect the same sense of spontaneity and poetic ambiguity found throughout his work. His innovative approach secured his lasting importance in twentieth-century art.
