Igor Mitoraj (1944–2014) was a Polish sculptor and one of the most internationally recognised artists of his generation. Drawing on the artistic traditions of ancient Greece and Rome, he developed a distinctive contemporary interpretation of the classical human figure.
Mitoraj’s work is characterised by monumental heads, fragmented torsos and idealised faces, often shown with missing limbs, closed eyes or bandaged features. These deliberate imperfections create a tension between strength and vulnerability, exploring themes of beauty, memory, loss and the passage of time.
Working primarily in bronze, marble and terracotta, Mitoraj combined the harmony of classical sculpture with a distinctly modern sense of fragmentation. His sculptures and works on paper reflect his enduring fascination with mythology and the human body, establishing a visual language that is immediately recognisable and deeply rooted in European cultural history.
