Jean Carzou (1907–2000) was a French artist of Armenian origin, known for his refined linear style and atmospheric, highly detailed compositions. Originally trained in architecture, he brought a strong sense of structure and perspective to his paintings and works on paper.
His imagery often features imagined cities, ports, railway lines, ruins, palaces and solitary figures. Built from intricate networks of fine lines, these scenes combine architectural precision with a dreamlike sense of memory, mystery and isolation.
Carzou worked extensively in painting, lithography, engraving, book illustration and stage design. His prints preserve the distinctive qualities of his broader practice, balancing delicate draughtsmanship with expressive colour and complex spatial arrangements. Through this recognisable visual language, he developed a unique position within post-war French art.
