Jean Cocteau (1889–1963) was a French poet, writer, filmmaker and visual artist whose wide-ranging practice made him one of the most distinctive figures of the twentieth-century avant-garde. Closely connected with the cultural life of Paris, he worked across literature, theatre, cinema and the visual arts, approaching each discipline as a different form of poetic expression.
Cocteau developed an immediately recognisable graphic language based on fluid lines, elegant simplicity and carefully reduced forms. Faces, mythological figures, lovers and dreamlike characters recur throughout his work, reflecting his fascination with identity, beauty, transformation and classical mythology.
His visual practice included drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and decorative projects. In his lithographs and other works on paper, Cocteau achieved a remarkable sense of movement and emotion through minimal means, combining graceful contours with symbolic and deeply personal imagery.
