Karel Appel (1921–2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor and printmaker, and one of the leading figures of the European post-war avant-garde. In 1948, he co-founded CoBrA, an influential movement that rejected academic conventions in favour of spontaneity, experimentation and direct emotional expression.
Appel developed a highly recognisable visual language defined by bold colour, energetic brushwork and deliberately simplified forms. Inspired by children’s drawings, folk art and imaginative imagery, he frequently depicted human figures, animals and fantastical creatures with distorted features and a sense of raw, instinctive vitality.
Throughout his career, Appel worked across painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. His lithographs and other works on paper preserve the immediacy and physical energy of his larger compositions, combining vigorous lines, expressive forms and intense areas of colour.
