Kees van Dongen (1877–1968) was a Dutch-born French artist and one of the leading figures associated with Fauvism. He became known for his expressive portraits, bold use of colour and elegant, highly stylised depictions of the human figure.
After settling in Paris, Van Dongen drew inspiration from the city’s nightlife, theatres, cabarets and fashionable society. His portraits are often characterised by elongated silhouettes, vivid contrasts and strikingly emphasised eyes, creating a distinctive sense of glamour, sensuality and theatricality.
Working across painting, drawing, lithography and book illustration, Van Dongen developed a recognisable visual language that combined confident line with intense colour. His prints and works on paper retain the immediacy and expressive character of his paintings, establishing him as one of the most distinctive portraitists of twentieth-century modern art.
