Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) was an Argentine-born Italian artist and one of the most influential figures of post-war European art. As the founder of Spatialism, he sought to move beyond the traditional distinction between painting and sculpture by introducing space, movement and light as essential elements of the artwork.
Fontana is best known for his Concetti spaziali, in which he pierced or cut the surface of the canvas. These radical gestures transformed the canvas from a flat pictorial surface into a physical object, opening it to the surrounding space and redefining the possibilities of painting.
His practice encompassed painting, sculpture, ceramics and works on paper, all united by a spirit of experimentation. Through punctures, incisions and simplified abstract forms, Fontana developed a distinctive visual language that had a profound influence on later generations of artists.
