Sam Francis (1923–1994) was an American artist associated with Abstract Expressionism and post-war abstraction. He became known for his luminous use of colour, energetic brushwork, and compositions that often balance intense areas of pigment with open expanses of white space.
Printmaking was an important part of Francis’s practice, particularly lithography, etching, and screenprinting. His prints reflect the same sense of movement, spontaneity, and colour that defined his paintings, making them highly recognisable and widely collected.
