Katarzyna Kobro (1898–1951) was a pioneering sculptor and art theorist, and one of the leading figures of the Polish and international Constructivist avant-garde. Closely connected with the artistic circles of interwar Poland, she helped redefine modern sculpture through her radical exploration of space, rhythm and proportion.
Kobro rejected the traditional idea of sculpture as a closed, solid mass. In her celebrated Spatial Compositions, open geometric planes extend into the surrounding environment, treating empty space as an essential part of the work. Carefully structured relationships between form, colour and movement reflected her ambition to unite art, architecture and everyday life.
Although only a limited number of her works have survived, Kobro’s innovative ideas had a lasting influence on modern sculpture. Through her sculptures, paintings and theoretical writings, she developed a rigorous visual language that established her as one of the most important artists of twentieth-century modernism.
