Joan Miró

Portrait of Joan Miro Barcelona 1935 June 13 1 1

Joan Miró (1893–1983) was a Catalan painter, sculptor, ceramicist, and printmaker whose radical imagination shaped one of the most distinctive visual languages of modern art. Closely associated with Surrealism yet independent in spirit, he transformed birds, stars, women, moons, and abstract signs into compositions filled with poetry, movement, and mystery.

Deeply rooted in Catalonia and inspired by dreams, poetry, and the subconscious, Miró moved freely between figuration and abstraction. His animated lines, simplified forms, and vivid colors created a symbolic universe that could appear playful and spontaneous while remaining carefully balanced and deeply expressive.

Printmaking occupied a central place in Miró’s career. Working in lithography, etching, aquatint, drypoint, and woodcut, and collaborating with renowned workshops such as Mourlot and Lacourière, he produced celebrated graphic cycles and illustrated books including Parler seul, À toute épreuve, and Le Lézard aux plumes d’or. His prints remain admired for their technical experimentation, vibrant color, and unmistakable visual energy.
