Bernard Buffet (1928–1999) was one of the most recognisable French figurative artists of the postwar period. He developed a highly distinctive style defined by sharp black outlines, elongated forms and a restrained, often sombre palette.
His subjects ranged from portraits and still lifes to Parisian streets, interiors, religious scenes and landscapes. At a time when abstraction dominated much of the European art world, Buffet remained firmly committed to figurative painting, creating an immediately recognisable visual language marked by austerity, tension and emotional intensity.
